Amillennialism is a belief held by some Christians about the end times and the reign of Christ on earth. The prefix “a-” in Amillennialism means “no” or “not,” indicating that Amillennialists do not believe in a literal 1000-year reign of Christ on earth, as described in the book of Revelation.
What is Amillennialism
Instead, Amillennialists believe that the thousand-year period mentioned in Revelation 20 is symbolic, representing the present age in which we live. During this time, Christ is spiritually reigning in the hearts of believers, and Satan is bound from deceiving the nations. Amillennialists interpret the book of Revelation as a highly symbolic and metaphorical book, and they do not believe that its visions should be taken literally.
According to Amillennialism, Christ’s kingdom is not a physical kingdom on earth, but a spiritual one that is manifested through the church. Amillennialists believe that the church is currently fulfilling Christ’s mandate to make disciples of all nations and to spread the gospel throughout the world.
Amillennialists also believe that the second coming of Christ will be a single, climactic event, rather than a series of events as described in other eschatological views. They believe that when Christ returns, He will judge the living and the dead, and establish the new heavens and the new earth.
One of the criticisms of Amillennialism is that it is seen as a pessimistic view of the future, as it does not anticipate a literal 1000-year reign of Christ on earth. However, proponents of Amillennialism argue that their view is not pessimistic, but rather realistic, acknowledging the sin and brokenness of the world while also affirming the hope and joy that come from living in Christ’s kingdom.
